Girl Seriously Injured after Being Struck by Car in Orange County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on November 25, 2017

Late on Tuesday afternoon, several children in the unincorporated Orange County town of Wedgefield were playing close to a home at 2811 Abney Avenue. It is not known whether or not the children were under any parental or adult supervision, but it appears that at some point, close to 4:30, one of them, a 5-year-old girl, left the sidewalk and ran out in front of a passing car. The driver of the car was either unable to stop in time or did not see the child and subsequently hit the girl with her car.

The driver of the car immediately stopped the vehicle and remained at the scene during the entirety of the following events. Emergency personnel were called in, and when they arrived they found the young girl trapped underneath the vehicle. Members of the Orange County Fire Rescue worked together to carefully extract her from beneath the car, and were eventually able to both remove and stabilize her. She was then airlifted from the location where the accident occurred and flown to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital.

At the time of this writing, it is believed that the young child, who has not been named, is in serious condition, however it is also believed that her condition remains stable. An official statement from the Florida Highway Patrol made clear that the crash is currently being treated as a difficult-to-prevent accident of horrible dimensions. The driver of the car that struck the child remains highly cooperative with the investigating authorities, and no charges have yet been filed against them.

The crash is still very much under review as the authorities and the entire community of Wedgefield work to figure out just what happened to cause such a tragic incident, whether or not the incident was preventable, and, if so, just who should shoulder the blame for failing to prevent it. It is possible that after the investigation is completed no one will be found as the sole recipient of blame and that, instead, this will be seen as one of those instances where numerous factors, none particularly malignant on their own, converged together to create one disastrous moment.
