Elderly Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck by Car in Seminole County

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on February 22, 2021

A fatal pedestrian accident took place in Seminole County on the night of Thursday, February 11th. Among the first responders to the incident were members of the Florida Highway Patrol. From this law enforcement agency we have the preliminary reports on the incident, which was described as taking place sometime around 8:45 p.m.

Shortly before this time, a 79-year-old from the nearby town of Fern Park was walking along U.S. 17-92 while within the borders of Seminole County. This person was walking unaccompanied at the time, and no one has yet come forward to state where it was the man was coming from or where it was that he was going.

At the same time that the 79-year-old was making their way along the side of the road, an SUV being driven by a 56-year-old from New York was making their way down the northern lanes of U.S. 17-92. It was shortly before the SUV reached the area where the 79-year-old was walking that the pedestrian left the shoulder of the roadway and began to try and cross the highway itself. The area where the pedestrian began to cross is close to the intersection between U.S. 17-92 within the town of Fern Park. The area where the pedestrian began to cross does not feature anything such as a crosswalk or other pedestrian safety zone, which means that at the time the car approached they were headed towards a person on foot who was trying to cross a stretch of the road not designed for anything but motor vehicles.

When the car reached the same area as the pedestrian, the pedestrian had made their way into the northern lane. The driver of the car failed to notice this until it was too late, and the pedestrian was similarly unable to avoid the speeding vehicle. The car struck the pedestrian with a considerable amount of force, knocking the man to the ground and inflicting severe injuries upon their body.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and notified the authorities. When paramedics and EMTs arrived, they took the man from the area to Orlando Health. It was sometime after arriving at the emergency medical facility that the man was pronounced dead.
