DeLand Crash Kills Pedestrian
An elderly DeLand man was on foot close to the intersection of Woodland Boulevard and Wildwood Road on Monday, January 27th, when they decided to leave the shoulder or sidewalk where they were traveling at attempt to cross the street. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that the pedestrian accident took place close to 6:50 in the evening, after the sun had set but before the deep darkness of the night had truly settled in.
It is believed that the area where the pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway does not have anything like crosswalks, and furthermore the reports stated that there was no intersection in the area where the pedestrian was crossing, something that might have provided them with a modicum of protection.
As the pedestrian was crossing the street, going from east to west, a 2015 Dodge Ram approached the area. It is not clear if the driver of the Dodge saw the pedestrian or if they remained oblivious to the presence of the man on foot up until the moment when the pedestrian and the car collided.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the front of the car struck the pedestrian head-on. This means that the pedestrian was struck down by the most forceful part of the car. As a result of the crash, the pedestrian was knocked violently to the ground. It is not clear who called the emergency response crews to the scene, but shortly after the incident took place numerous response crews, including EMTs and paramedics, reached the area and began to treat the badly wounded pedestrian. Unfortunately, as is so often the case in accidents involving pedestrians and cars, the extent of the injuries suffered by the 63-year-old was far too severe for the medical teams to handle. It is believed that the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
The accident remains under investigation as the authorities seek to discover what caused the pedestrian to try and cross the roadway at this particular time. The investigation will also attempt to uncover whether or not the driver of the car is in any way culpable for the fatal crash.
