22-Year-Old Pedestrian Struck and Killed by SUV in Sumter County
A young man from Clermont was reportedly killed after an accident that took place during the second to last week in November within Sumter County. What we currently know comes from members of the Florida Highway Patrol who were on hand after the accident to provide traffic reduction assistance and conduct the initial investigation into the incident. Members of this law enforcement organization in Sumter County issued the preliminary reports on the accident, and these state that it was very early in the morning when the reports began to arrive regarding the individual who had been struck by a vehicle as they were walking near to the roadway.
It was close to 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 26th, when the 22-year-old man from Clermont was walking along State Road 50. The area where the man was crossing is believed to be very close to County Road 751, although it is not believed that the individual was at the intersection of these two roads when the pedestrian accident took place. Since it doesn’t appear that there was a crosswalk in the area or that the man was attempting to cross the road at the time, it remains somewhat mysterious that they were inside of the roadway shortly before the incident.
The driver of an SUV was approaching the area while the pedestrian was walking or standing within the roadway, and, it being still dark outside, failed to notice the person on foot until after it was too late. As a result, the vehicle collided with the 22-year-old, inflicting severe injuries upon their person.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene. It is believed that they were among those who called 9-1-1 to report the events of the crash. When members of the FHP arrived, they found the pedestrian as described, lying in the roadway and badly injured. EMTs and paramedics offered immediate emergency support when they arrived, but the injuries that the pedestrian sustained as a result of the crash proved to be beyond the reach of the emergency response crews. The 22-year-old was declared dead while still at the scene of the crash.
The SUV’s driver also suffered from injuries as a result of the crash, but these were described as minor and it is believed that they escaped relatively unscathed from the incident.
