Former Mayor of Kissimmee, Florida Killed While Riding Bike

Frank Attkisson, a former mayor of Kissimmee, Florida, was killed after being hit by a car while riding his bike on Thursday night. The 61 year old was riding his bike on Kissimmee Park Road near Tohopekaliga around 7:00 PM in the evening when he was hit from behind by a Hyundai Elantra. Attkisson was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Police are currently investigating the accident.

Tractor-Trailer Flips and Burns on I-95 in Brevard County

Very early on Thursday morning, part Interstate 95, cutting through Brevard County, was shut down due to a fiery accident that resulted in a semi-truck and trailer being engulfed in flames. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash took place close to Grant-Valkaria, at Interstate 95’s 164th mile marker.

Florida DOT Orders Examination of All Overpasses

After a major overpass bridge along Atlanta’s Interstate 85 caught on fire and collapsed, the Florida Department of Transportation is ordering that all overpass bridges throughout the state that are undergoing construction be inspected for possible flammable substances. The move is a preventative one, aimed at ensuring the future safety of motorists along Florida’s numerous highways as the overpasses undergo construction, updates, and routine maintenance. Looking at the Atlanta disaster as an example of what can happen if all the necessary precautions are not taken care of, the Florida Department of Transportation stated (through its Central Florida District 5 spokesperson, Steve Olson) that numerous factors exist that could potentially weaken the structure of an overpass. Fire is one of the most disastrous as it causes structural compromise that may not even be noticed until the bridge itself collapses.

Update on Fatality Involving Oyster-Hauling Truck in Osceola

A week ago, we reported on an accident that took place between a truck hauling oysters and a Lexus that resulted in the death of the Lexus driver, a 71-year-old man. When we wrote the article we mentioned that the truck and its driver had fled the scene and that neither had been recovered. Now, a week later, the Florida Highway Patrol has released an update to the story that indicates that the truck involved in the incident was recovered.

Pilot Dies in Tuesday Plane Crash in Marion County

On Tuesday morning a small plane flying through Marion County crashed in a field close to 150th Avenue Road in Williston. The crash, which took place on the property of 21850 NW 150th Avenue Road, was initially unreachable by emergency response teams due to trees downed along the road, blocking the route of the first responders. When, 25 minutes after the plane crashed, officers from Marion County Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway patrol were able to reach the plane they found a completely destroyed plane and a dead pilot.

Woman Struck by Amtrak Train in Intercession City

An Amtrak train was traveling through Intercession City in Osceola County on Wednesday when it suddenly struck a woman who was either crossing the tracks or simply standing on them. It is believed that the accident took place around 6:30 in the evening, only five or so miles away from Kissimmee. The information that is currently known about the situation indicates that only one individual was struck by the train, even though the initial statement recorded that the train had struck two people. An investigation is underway partially to determine which of these given statements is correct and whether or not officials should be searching for a second victim.

Train and Car Collide in Ormond Beach
