Orange City Motorcyclist Severely Injured During Crash on S.R. 100
According to preliminary reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 77-year-old motorcyclist sustained severe injuries yesterday afternoon when he was involved in a rear-end collision with another motorist on State Road 100 in Putnam County.
It was approximately 2:16 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2023, when a 77-year-old man from Orange City was driving his motorcycle in the westbound direction of State Road 100 while a 23-year-old man from Keystone Heights followed directly behind in a sedan-style vehicle. Authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that as the motorcyclist pulled up to the approaching intersection with State Road 26, he began to properly slow down and move over into the left turn lane of the highway. For reasons that would later be determined, the 23-year-old driver failed to yield for the biker and crashed into the rear-end of the motorcycle.
The impact from the two-vehicle accident caused the motorcycle to roll over several times and the 77-year-old rider was ejected from his seat in the process. Florida Highway Patrol officers and Putnam County emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene of the crash and transported the seriously-injured motorcyclist to UF Health Gainesville for additional medical treatment. His current condition is unknown.
The 23-year-old driver of the sedan was unharmed during the collision, however, once local authorities began their routine investigation, it was determined that this individual was driving under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. He was subsequently arrested for DUI resulting in serious bodily injury.
As we wrap-up one of the busiest weekends for holiday travel in Florida and across the United States, a strong sense of heightened awareness is imperative, especially when operating a 3000+ lb. motor vehicle. Set down the cell phones, buckle up those seat belts, stay sober, and arrive alive to your intended destination.
