Motorcyclist Killed During Rear-End Crash on County Road 44A
As the number of travelers taking to the roads this extended 4th of July weekend continues to increase here in Florida and the rest of the country, so too does the amount of accidents involving motorcyclists. Sadly, one such incident occurred this past Sunday near Bill Collins Road in Lake County.
According to preliminary auto accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 2, 2023, when a 51-year-old man from Enterprise was driving a 2019 Ducati Panigale motorcycle in the southbound direction of County Road 44A in Lake County. Directly in front of the motorcyclist was a 19-year-old man from Umatilla driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was also pulling a trailer.
As the two men approached the upcoming intersection, the motorcyclist purportedly attempted to illegally pass the pickup while the truck was making a left turn onto Bill Collins Road. The two vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision when the motorcycle struck the back tire of the pickup.
Lake County emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene and they immediately transported the severely-injured motorcyclist to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares. He was unable to survive and passed away a short time later.
The 19-year-old driver of the Chevy pickup truck was uninjured during the collision and remained at the crash site. He was said to be in full cooperation with local authorities.
The fatal motorcycle accident is currently under investigation. Further details are expected to be released in the near future.
