Motorcyclist Killed During Guardrail Crash in Pinellas County
As millions of people continue to enjoy an extended holiday weekend, a family in Florida has been forced to plan a funeral for their loved one after they were involved in a fatal motorcycle accident Thursday evening in Pinellas County.
Early collision reports from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office indicate that it was shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving when they were first alerted to an auto accident involving a motorcyclist in Indian Shores. According to responding officers, 45-year-old Kevin Meade was driving a 2004 Harley-Davidson at a high rate of speed in the westbound direction along the Park Boulevard Bridge. It was as the motorcyclist approached the area of Gulf Boulevard when he seemingly failed to properly maneuver a left curve in the road and crashed into a guardrail.
After the collision with the guardrail, the 45-year-old motorcyclist was ejected from the Harley-Davidson and his bike finally stopped when it slammed into the Indian Shores city sign. Several Pinellas County emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of the crash, but despite their best medical efforts, Mr. Meade passed away from his severe injuries.
It is unknown at this time if the motorcycle accident victim was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred, however, detectives with the Pinellas County Major Accident Investigation Team have stated that speed and impairment played a significant part in the crash.
When accidents like this take place, it can be easy to presume that the fault is with the driver, and even though speeding and driving under the influence of a substance have already been established by local authorities, there are additional issues that could have contributed to this motorcycle crash, including:
- What was the weather like at the time of the accident?
- Did it create dangerous driving conditions?
- Does this roadway receive regular maintenance or does it suffer from problematic potholes?
- Did the motorcycle suffer a mechanical malfunction?
- Did the driver suffer a medical episode prior to the crash?
Further details surrounding this fatal accident are expected to be released to the public after the conclusion of the investigation.
