Woman and Four Children Struck by Van in Orange County Hit-and-Run

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on July 8, 2019

A collision between a silver passenger van and five pedestrians is currently under investigation in Orange County as troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol attempt to discover just what happened, as well as the whereabouts of the driver of the vehicle in question. What we know so far is that it was sometime around 9:00 at night when a woman and her four children were walking along Pine Hills Road. When they reached an area with a designated crosswalk, the woman and her children left the sidewalk and began to cross the road.

It is not clear if the area where the crosswalk was positioned includes an intersection with a stoplight or stop sign, or if it is simply a pedestrian crossing zone with flashing lights that go off to indicate that pedestrians are indeed crossing the roadway at that time.

Regardless, the presence of the five individuals crossing the street was likely difficult to miss, which leaves investigators with a tremendous amount of questions regarding the circumstances that led to the collision between the pedestrians and the silver van.

It is believed that witnesses to the incident were on hand to describe the events to the responding officers. According to these witnesses – and the subsequent report by the authorities – at the same time that the woman and her children were crossing the roadway a silver passenger van approached the crosswalk. It is not clear if the van slowed down, if the driver saw the pedestrians, or if there was any indication at all that the person behind the wheel of the vehicle was watching the roadway before them. What is clear is that as the van drove through the area, it managed to strike the woman as well as all of the four children, who are aged from 7 months to 4 years old.

Troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol and rescue crews from the Orange County Fire Rescue were on the scene to offer medical assistance to the victims who were all taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. At the time of this writing, it is not believed that anyone has been apprehended in relation to the crash. It is also believed that all five of the crash victims are recovering.
