Teen Killed in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident on State Road 436
A 13-year-old boy was struck and killed recently in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident on State Road 436 in east Orange County. Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating the accident report that the teen was struck while attempting to cross at the intersection of Semoran Boulevard and Old Cheney Highway. Troopers say that the teen was using the crosswalk and had the right of way when he was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 51-year-old Winter Park woman. FHP Spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes said that the woman was traveling north on Semoran Boulevard when she ran a red light and struck the teen.
The boy was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital for treatment but died from his injuries shortly after arrival. Troopers say that the woman continued traveling north on Semoran Boulevard after striking the teen. Accident witnesses followed the Malibu until the driver collided with a Mazda CX-9 SUV on Baldwin Park Street about a mile north of the hit-and-run accident. The hit-and-run driver was taken to Winter Park Hospital, where she received treatment for minor injuries. The FHP is expecting to file multiple charges against her, pending the results of toxicology tests.
This tragic accident is a grim reminder of the perils that pedestrians and bicyclists face on Central Florida on a daily basis. In addition to having to cross busy highways and ride or walk along roads built for automobiles, they are also at elevated risk for serious injury due to:
- Distracted drivers
- Drivers who are impaired by alcohol and/or drugs
- Drivers who disobey traffic signals
- Drivers who speed and travel too fast for weather conditions
- A lack of sidewalks, elevated crosswalks and other pedestrian-friendly safety measures
