Runaway Car Causes Four Children to be Hospitalized in Orlando

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on September 2, 2016

The inclement weather hitting Florida over the past week has been blamed by the driver of a black Camaro for causing him to lose control of the car and hit four children along Orlando’s Bumby Avenue. The children, none of whom have been named, run from age 5 to 11-years-old.

According to the statement issued by Orlando police officer Lt. Jonathan Bigelow, the children were with their mother, standing or walking along the eastern side of Bumby Avenue when the Camaro, which was heading north, began wavering on the wet road, clearly out of control. The Camaro first collided with a parked car and then ploughed into the group of kids.

All four of the children were taken to a nearby hospital as soon as the emergency crews arrived. Fortunately, three of them were well enough to be released soon afterward. The fourth, a six-year-old girl, incurred several fractures to her left leg. The doctors who attended her decided that she would need to be kept at least overnight and that she would need to undergo surgery.

After the accident, the Orlando police department saw fit to release a statement targeting all potential drivers. In the statement, the police remind everyone that the road is going to be wet and slick for the next few days, occasionally to the point where driving along the street is dangerous to a degree that makes it more prudent to stay home. The statement goes on to encourage people to use their common sense and to refrain from driving if the weather seems especially hazardous.

Regarding the collision between the car and the children, no formal charges have been brought foward against the unnamed driver of the Camaro, and it is not know if the ongoing investigation has unearthed any new information that indicates which direction the authorities will begin to head.

In circumstances such as this, even though the outcome was far more beneficial than might have otherwise been expected, we are reminded just how fragile our lives are, and how much our own safety depends on the responsibility and caution of the individuals around us.
