OPD Identifies Suspect in Early September Hit-and-Run Case
Police working within Orlando released an update to an ongoing story during the middle of September indicating that they had reason to believe they were on the trail of an individual responsible for a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of an elderly man. The accident itself took place on the 4th of September, close to 9:00 at night. At this time, an 84-year-old individual was walking along East Michigan Street at Zephyr Road. It is not known if the 84-year-old was on their way to their home, coming from their home, or traveling in between two other places.
The area where the individual was struck was an intersection, which suggests a high probability that there was a crosswalk and other pedestrian features. This factor will play a tremendous role as the investigation into the incident continues to unfold.
What exactly took place is not entirely clear. The reports state that as the man attempted to cross the road, a vehicle came down and struck them. The report did not describe the vehicle, and it is not clear if there were witnesses in the area to help the authorities identify just what had happened and why. After striking the pedestrian, we know that the driver of the vehicle continued to drive, leaving the scene as quickly as they had entered it.
We do not know who called the emergency teams to the area, but we do believe that they arrived shortly after the incident took place. When the paramedics and EMTs reached the crash site, the individual was still alive. Medical personnel carefully placed the person into an ambulance and then rushed them to a nearby hospital. The reports stated that the man was in critical condition when admitted to the emergency medical facility.
Despite the efforts of EMTs, paramedics, and the doctors and nurses at the hospital, the extent of the 84-year-old’s injuries were too much for him to overcome. He was pronounced dead sometime after arriving at the hospital.
As the investigation remains ongoing, the Orlando Police Department is currently open to receiving information from individuals who might possess information regarding the fatal accident. Updates during the middle of September indicated that the OPD did identify a person of interest, however no information regarding this individual was released.
