FHP Troopers Seeking Public’s Help in Hit-and-Run Accident that Killed Two Women in Pine Hills
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are asking for the public’s help after a recent hit-and-run accident that killed two Orlando women. Troopers say that the 53-year-old and 78-year-old female victims of the accident were longtime friends and neighbors in Orlando’s Richmond Estates neighborhood. Troopers report that the women were traveling together after their weekly trip to the grocery store when a driver running a red light struck their vehicle in Pine Hills and fatally injured them both.
Troopers say that the accident occurred around 7 p.m. one recent evening when the 53-year-old victim was driving west on Balboa Drive across North Pine Hills Road. Troopers say that she had a green light and the right of way when the unidentified driver of a northbound Volkswagen SUV ran the red light and collided with the driver’s side of the victim’s Toyota sedan. Investigators say that the driver of the Volkswagen abandoned his vehicle after the accident, leaving an injured female passenger in the front seat. After speaking with investigators, the passenger initially claimed that she did not know the name of the man who was driving the Volkswagen.
FHP Sgt. Kim Montes told reporters that, "(The passenger) said she was waiting at a bus stop in the rain when he stopped and offered her a ride. She got in and said he started driving crazy."
However, a check of the 2004 VW Touareg’s registration records showed it belonged to the injured passenger’s sister, Montes said. She was treated for minor injuries at Orlando Regional Medical Center for undisclosed injuries and was retained by investigators for additional questioning. FHP investigators are seeking surveillance video from businesses and residences near the busy intersection to assist their investigation. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver is asked to call Crimeline at 407-423-8477.
