FHP asks for Public’s Help in Fatal Hit-and-Run Orlando Pedestrian Accident
Orlando pedestrian accident attorneys are growing increasingly concerned that recent efforts to protect pedestrians and bicyclists from being struck and injured or killed are falling short of their goals. In February 2013, the Florida Department of Transportation released their Florida Pedestrian and Bicycle Strategic Safety Plan, which provided a framework for reducing fatalities and injuries on Florida roadways. State safety officials began the study after data showed that Florida pedestrian accident fatality rates were nearly double the national average and bicycle accident fatality rates were nearly triple the national average.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, our state had the highest pedestrian fatality rate among all states in 2011 at 2.60 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 persons. Data from the NHTSA “Dangerous by Design” report indicates that Florida has the top four most dangerous metropolitan areas for walking in the country. As has been well documented in local, state and federal media outlets, the most dangerous metro areas are, in order:
- Orlando-Kissimmee
- Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater
- Jacksonville
- Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach
Clearly, there is plenty of room for improvement in making Florida roadways safer. State and federal safety officials need everyone’s help in implementing their strategic safety plan, especially people who drive, walk, bicycle and otherwise use Florida roadways.
