Worker Injured in Electrical Accident in Seminole County
A maintenance worker working on a traffic light in Seminole County was injured recently when she received a powerful shock from a power line. The Seminole County Fire Department reported that the victim, age and address unknown, is an employee of a contractor for the county and was working in a high-reach bucket on a signal at Ronald Reagan Boulevard and Country Club Drive when the accident occurred. A spokesperson for the department reported that the bucket came into contact with the power line, which was carrying 7,200 volts. The worker received a serious shock and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition. The accident occurred around 9:15 a.m., and crews from Seminole County and the Sanford Fire Department were dispatched to the scene to render assistance. The accident shut down the intersection for several hours while officials conducted their investigation and debris was cleared.
Electrical accidents are a very real threat to anyone working on or near power lines, especially overhead power lines. Nearly four in ten fatal electrocutions involve workers coming into contact with overhead power lines. Even brief contact with a power line can result in debilitating and disfiguring injuries such as these:
- Loss of muscle control and coordination
- Internal hemorrhaging
- Permanent damage to nerves, muscles and other types of tissue
- Heart arrhythmia and cardiac arrest
- Horrible burns at and near the point of contact, resulting in significant tissue loss and occasionally, amputation of the affected limb(s)
- Blindness
- Hearing loss
- Many other injuries that can permanently affect the victims’ ability to work and provide for themselves and their families
Accident investigators have not announced the cause of the accident, but if they determine that the employer or another party were negligent, the injured worker may be able to seek damages to help pay for medical bills, replace lost income and compensate her for pain and suffering and other damages.
