Flagler County Construction Workers Severely Injured in Truss Collapse Accident
On Thursday, September 3rd, 2020, deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the site of a residential construction accident in a popular Palm Coast neighborhood. Preliminary statements acquired at the scene indicate that two workers had been seriously injured after multiple wooden trusses collapsed and pinned the men under a pile of mangled construction rubble.
It was early Wednesday morning when crews with a local construction company arrived at the site of their latest home-building project on Londonderry Drive in Palm Coast. According to a witness statement retrieved by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, one construction worker was working atop the roof when the support trusses began to wiggle loose. This worker did everything in his power to prevent himself and the structure from falling to the ground below, but his efforts unfortunately proved to be futile due to just the sheer weight of the trusses themselves. It all happened so quickly that no one was able to properly react to the situation, and two construction workers who were underneath the apparatus at the time became trapped by the falling debris.
Upon arriving at the scene of the accident, it was discovered that a 57-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were both suffering from serious head injuries and severe leg lacerations. Emergency response teams and officers with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office immediately took over for other construction workers who had been trying to hold up the broken trusses in order to alleviate some of the pressure and weight from the injured men. After crawling through the piles of rubbish and cutting their way to the injured men, firefighters were finally able to successfully free them. One man was airlifted to Halifax Hospital, while the other was transported by ambulance to a local Palm Coast medical facility. Both men are still in the hospital trying to recover from their injuries, although it is unknown what their current condition is.
