Construction Crew Rescued from 10-Foot Trench in Palm Beach County
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue teams were called into action this past Thursday morning after three members of a construction crew found themselves trapped in a ten-foot-deep worksite trench at the Ocean Royale condominium project along U.S. Highway 1 in Juno Beach.
According to the latest incident reports released to the public, it was around 9:30 a.m. on August 19, 2021, when on-duty officers with the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue were dispatched to a construction site and future home of a luxury condo complex at the 700 block of Ocean Royale Way. Upon their arrival, rescuers were quickly ushered to an area of the building site where they found 3 workers stuck in a deep trench measuring roughly 10 feet down.
After careful consideration, it was determined by firefighters and their special operations team that the best plan of action was to bring in specific trench rescue equipment typically reserved for training. Once the rescuers had the proper tools in their hands, they made quick work out of saving the construction workers from the deep trench. Two of the individuals sustained undisclosed injuries which required them both to seek further medical assistance at a local hospital. It is unknown at this time exactly how severe their injuries are, how they received them, or what their condition currently is. It is also unclear how the workers became trapped in the first place.
As with any type of construction accident in the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be partaking in a thorough investigation of their own to make sure this was truly an accident and not due to any safety violations on behalf of the workers or hazardous, subpar working conditions from their employer.
