Seville Man Killed in Ocoee Construction Accident
A freak construction accident in Orange County this month claimed the life of a worker while a nearby crane was in operation. While working on the reconstruction and widening of State Road 50 in Ocoee on October 16th, 2015, 25-year-old construction worker Guillermo Solis of Seville, Florida was struck in the head by a falling object and subsequently died. The object, which had dropped a distance of nearly 50 feet after having been suspended by the crane, turned out to be a wooden pile cushion from a pile driver.
At the time of the accident, Solis and his coworkers were stationed just east of State Road 429 at Bluford Avenue and Colonial Drive. It was around 9 a.m. when the debris from the pile driver fell from the crane and struck Solis. According to Ocoee police who arrived at the scene, the victim was rushed immediately to Ocoee’s nearby Health Central Hospital, then airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center. It was at this second location that Guillermo Solis was pronounced dead.
Lane Construction Corp. in Maitland, the company for whom Solis was working at the time of the accident, has issued a statement extending the company’s deepest sympathies of the victim’s family and friends. Of course, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will be investigating the incident to determine what exactly occurred, whether appropriate safety and machine operation standards were observed, and if there was any specific, identifiable fault involved. Depending upon the results of OSHA’s investigation, Lane Construction Corp. could end up writing a significant check to Solis’s estate. It is also possible that Solis himself will be found to have ignored safety guidelines, further illustrating the tragedy of the accident.
