One Killed and One Injured in I-4 Construction Accident
The massive $2.3 billion revamp of a 21-mile stretch of Interstate 4 came to a screeching halt this past weekend when a fatal construction accident claimed the life of yet another SGL worker – the fifth person to die since the project began back in 2015.
According to incident reports retrieved from the Orlando Police Department, the initial call to 911 occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. this past Saturday, September 28th. When emergency response teams arrived on-site, they discovered 2 victims, Ulises J. Corrales Ibarra & David Trujillo, both construction workers employed by SGL Constructors – the company at the helm of this massive Florida interstate overhaul.
Witnesses to the fatal industrial accident stated that the two men were operating an elevated lift when an uncentered, unstable beam slipped off a piece of equipment and struck their construction vehicle, which then flipped over and pinned Ibarra underneath. Despite their best efforts, rescuers were unable to save him and he passed away at the scene. Trujillo suffered a non-life-threatening head injury and was transported to a local hospital for further medical treatment.
Steve Olson, a representative from the Florida Department of Transportation, released a statement to the press shortly after the incident:
“We would like to offer sincere sympathy and condolences to the family during this difficult time. The FDOT expects a full accounting from the contractor as to the cause. Furthermore FDOT will require corrective measures be put in place to prevent further injuries and deaths associated with this project. This includes an after action plan for increased safety and renewed emphasis that the contractor continues enforcing a culture of safety during all aspects of the I-4 Ultimate project.”
