Eustis Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Construction Zone Accident
Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that a 44-year-old man working on a pedestrian safety project was struck and killed by a truck that raced through the construction zone and fled from the scene. Troopers say that the victim was wearing bright reflective clothing and standing in front of a work truck in the 2600 block of South Florida Avenue around 2 a.m. when he was struck and fatally injured. The impact threw the man’s body 80 feet.
Lakeland police Sgt. Gary B. Gross told reporters that another member of the construction crew heard but did not see the accident. Sgt. Gross said that the worker "heard several thumping sounds and responded to the rear of the work truck to see several damaged orange traffic barrels and the victim lying in the roadway."
"It sounds like the guy [driver] hit one [barrel] after another after another and then he hits this guy," Gross said.
Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a dark-colored pickup truck with damage to the front left side. Witnesses last saw the truck fleeing from the scene heading south on South Florida Avenue. Police are looking at footage captured by cameras in the vicinity to see if they can provide any additional clues to the make and model of the truck.
In some hit-and-run accidents, the driver who caused the accident immediately panics, flees the scene and then turns him or herself in a short time later. Sadly, in many cases, the at-fault driver never turns themselves in to authorities. They know the reason they caused the accident is that they were driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, distracted by cell phones and other electronic devices or were otherwise negligent in operating their vehicle.
