Woman Dies after Crash in Orange County Intersection
A car accident that happened in Orange County this past Friday resulted in the death of one individual. Details on the incident emerged shortly after the crash took place, when officers with the Florida Highway Patrol told reporters that they had responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Rio Grande Avenue and 18th Street at close to 7:00 in the evening. The statements from the officers did not completely fill in all questions left by the the incident, but many of the pertinent details were included.
We do know that the crash involved a 31-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman. Both of the individuals were driving cars and closing in on the Rio Grand Avenue and 18th Street intersection. It is believed that the 31-year-old was traveling in the southern lanes of Rio Grande Avenue while the 56-year-old was driving along Miller Avenue. As she neared Rio Grande Ave, the woman attempted to make a left turn in order to merge onto the busier street. It is not clear if this intersection has a stoplight or simply stop signs, nor is it clear if the woman had the right of way at the time when she tried to turn.
The report from the Florida Highway Patrol did indicate that the the 31-year-old driver was traveling above the speed limit shortly before the accident, although the official report from the FHP did not specify just how much over the limit he was driving.
It was while the 56-year-old was attempting to make the turn that the other car slammed into hers.
Emergency response teams arrived at the scene shortly after the collision, and it is believed that the both the woman and the man were alive, although injured, when the paramedics began to attend to them. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital and admitted as being in critical condition. The report stated that the work of the doctors and nurses was not enough to stabilize her and she was declared dead shortly after arriving at the medical center.
It is not known if the 31-year-old was injured in the crash. Charges are currently pending in the case.
