Florida U-turn Accident Leaves Four Dead
A family of four was killed after their car collided with a pickup truck last week. The accident happened around Titusville on State Road 405. According to police investigators, the four people were from the same family and all from the United Kingdom. They were driving a rental vehicle and appear to have been returning from watching a rocket launch at Florida’s space center.
For a yet-to-be-determined reason, the car made a U-turn on Scission Road, during which their sedan crashed into an oncoming heavy duty pick-up truck. The four family members were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment to minor injuries. He has since been released.
Making a U-turn can be very dangerous, especially on a busy road. For this reason, negligent U-turns are a common cause of motor vehicle accidents. Factors that can contribute to a U-turn car accident include:
- Making the U-turn from a wrong location, such as from a parking space or the right of two left turn lanes.
- Poor weather conditions, including storms and fog, can reduce traction and visibility and cause a driver not to see an oncoming vehicle.
- Failure to yield the right of way and failure to see oncoming traffic.
- Not adhering to traffic rules.
When someone making a negligent U-turn causes an accident that results in an injury, the injured party can seek compensation for their injuries. To do so, he or she must file a Florida personal injury lawsuit. If successful, the victim can receive compensation for such damages as:
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Diminished employment opportunities
- Pain and suffering
- Future medical expenses
- Future lost wages
- Loss of affection (i.e., loss of consortium)
