Two Boys on Bicycles Receive Non-Critical Injuries in Collision with Car in Orange County
A frightening accident happened on the the morning of March 1st in the eastern part of Orange County that thankfully resulted only in minor injuries, but that reinforced for several people just how tentative our hold on life can be. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred close to 8:00 in the morning, at the intersection of Alafaya Club Drive and Lokanotosa Trail. Two boys, aged 5 and 8, were riding their bikes to their elementary school when they began crossing the street. At the same time, a red Nissan Maxima was driving nearby. It is not clear exactly how, whether the boys forgot to look or whether the driver of the car was not paying attention, but the two boys were hit by the car.
Man Sentenced for Death of Orlando Girl
A victim advocate described Jordan’s last bike ride with his best friend to the court, while his 11 year old client sat next to him crying. The bike ride happened nearly two years ago in Ocoee, Florida, near Orlando.
Bicyclist Killed by Elderly Driver in Cocoa Beach
During the mid-afternoon on Monday in Cocoa Beach, an accident occurred between an unnamed cyclist and a car driven by an elderly woman. The Cocoa Beach Police Department issued a statement saying that the incident, which happened along the Cocoa Beach Causeway (also known as State Road 520), occurred as the cyclist, an unnamed homeless man who is believed to be 45-years-old, attempted to cross the road.
51-Year-Old Cyclist Killed in Brevard County Crash
In Brevard County this past Thursday, a 2002 Chevy pickup truck driving south on US-1 across the St. Sebastian River Bridge collided with a bicycle headed north on the same highway. The cyclist, 59-year-old David Smith, a resident of Micco, was riding along US-1 and, according to the report, was on the white line painted on the highway’s border. The collision between the bicycle and the car was almost head-on, with the front right corner of the pickup colliding with the front tire of the bicycle, and caused Smith and his bike to collide with the concrete wall dividing the highway’s southbound shoulder from the city’s sidewalk. The bicycle was ultimately propelled over the wall and onto the sidewalk itself.
Teenager Perishes in Baker County Bicycle Accident
A 17-year-old boy has died in Baker County, the result of an auto accident that occurred Monday night. The police department indicates that the boy was riding his bike after dark near the Lee and Baker Mobile Home Park on North Boulevard West. A 2001 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound on North Boulevard West when the bicycle appeared in the roadway heading southbound out of the mobile home park. The driver of the truck reported to authorities that he tried to swerve to avoid the boy on the bicycle, but could not in time, and struck the teenager in his side. The force of the collision launched the boy off of the bike and he came to rest on the pavement.
Woman Critically Injured in Palm Coast Bicycle Collision
Bailey Anne Cagliuso, 26, of Palm Coast was critically injured on October 21st, when she attempted to exit her driveway on her bicycle. As she pulled onto Felshire Lane just before 7 p.m., she was struck by a southbound car driven by Kiara Hemby, 18, of Orangeburg, S.C., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Cagliuso was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with life-threatening injuries, investigators said.
Winter Park Bicyclist Killed by Drunk Driver
Crossing the street can be a challenge as a pedestrian or a bicyclist. You often have to negotiate several lanes of traffic and cars can be coming from multiple angles. The task is made more dangerous when a drunk driver jumps the curb and runs down the bicycle rider. That is exactly what happened to man in Winter Park, Fla.
Orange County Bicyclist Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver
Riding a bicycle can be dangerous in Florida. The state is the deadliest in the nation per capita. Florida has 5.7 bicycle deaths per million people, and averages 110 bicycle deaths a year. That is significantly higher than Louisiana, the second highest state, which averages 17 deaths per year.
Florida Cyclist Identified in Friday Morning’s Accident
A Tallahassee man was struck while riding his bicycle early Friday morning on North Monroe Street. The victim has been identified as Scott T. Dewert of Tallahassee, Florida. Dewert was riding on the shoulder along North Monroe when a Nissan Murano driven by a 38-year-old female from Tallahassee hit him as she exited a nearby credit union. She struck Dewert, which knocked him off of his back and into the street. Dewert was hit by an oncoming Honda Accord while lying in the street. Dewert was pronounced dead at the scene.
Florida Cyclist Slips on Alligator Remains
Tim Nicholls, a former police officer and top athlete, was severely injured the last weekend in June when his cycling team slid over alligator remains on the road, causing his bike to flip onto the concrete and other cyclists to run over him as they tried to stop. Nicholls is in recovery in the intensive care unit of the Broward Health Medical Center, where he is being treated for five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a broken clavicle, and several facial fractures.
