Tamarac Man Perishes In Accident on Florida Turnpike

An auto accident that occurred Tuesday during the morning commute hours has claimed the life of a 46-year-old Tamarac man. Florida Highway Patrol has identified the driver as Hubert Anderson, and his passenger as 67-year-old Leslie Anderson, also of Tamarac.

The younger Anderson was driving northbound on the Florida Turnpike when the tread of one of the tires separated. The blown tire caused Anderson to lose control of the vehicle and it left the road, turning over on the shoulder. Mr. Anderson was thrown from the vehicle during the accident and died at the scene. Ms. Anderson was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Florida Highway Patrol reports that the passenger was wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident, while the driver was not.

The accident happened at about 7:15 a.m. and blocked one of the northbound lanes for several hours after the crash as officials worked to help the victims and clear the scene. Though it is clear at this time that the cause of the incident was a failed tire, it is not known if excessive wear or other factors contributed to its failure.

While no other vehicles were involved in this incident, there were many witnesses to it. The timing and location of the accident put the vehicle in a densely traveled corridor during one of its heaviest traffic flows. The potential for greater loss was there, but thankfully did not happen.
