Serious Injury for Driver of SUV Following Sumter County Crash

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on May 24, 2020

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol in Sumter County indicated that an individual was reported as being in serious condition following a collision between an SUV and a tractor-trailer, both of which were traveling down Interstate 75 at the time. The accident happened on Monday, May 11th, close to 9:00 in the morning, as both of the vehicles in question were nearing mile marker 331.

What exactly happened remains the subject of an investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, but we do know that as the SUV was progressing down the central southbound lane of I-75 it approached the rear of the tractor-trailer, also traveling down the central southbound lane. The driver of the SUV either failed to see the tractor-trailer or became distracted shortly before reaching the much larger vehicle. As a result, the SUV struck the rear of the large truck, a collision which resulted in the windshield on the SUV cracking and the car’s airbags being deployed.

The driver of the tractor-trailer managed to retain control over their vehicle and stop the truck shortly after the crash happened. The driver of the SUV, on the other hand, lost control of their car as they hurtled down the road with a broken windshield and a car full of deployed airbags. It is not clear why exactly the driver of the SUV failed to stop their vehicle after the crash took place, but it was not until the vehicle neared mile marker 328, seven or so miles past the location where the initial collision took place, that this individual lost control of their vehicle.

The SUV began to rotate, entered the center median, and crashed mightily into a concrete culvert located in the area. It was only after this second crash that the SUV finally came to a stop.

By this time, emergency response crews from around Sumter County were on their way to the crash site. The driver of the tractor-trailer had escaped from the incident without suffering any injuries, but the 55-year-old Ocala resident sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash into the truck and culvert. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under investigation.
