Local Motorcyclist Killed During Multi-Vehicle Crash in Lake County
The month of October is off to a tragic start for the family and friends for a Leesburg motorcyclist after their loved one was involved in an accident with a pickup truck at a gas station near California Street last Saturday evening.
Although the exact time of the collision has not been noted by any local news outlets, reports from the responding troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Lake County indicate that it was shortly before 10:30 p.m. during the night of October 1, 2022, when a 57-year-old man from Leesburg was riding a 2016 Harley-Davidson Street Glide in the northbound direction of County Road 473. As the motorcyclist approached the area of California Street, a 59-year-old Leesburg man driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma from the opposite direction tried to pull into a nearby gas station and turned directly in front of the Harley-Davidson. The biker crashed into the side of the Toyota Tacoma and was thrown from his motorcycle onto the pavement.
A few minutes after the initial accident, a 51-year-old good samaritan from Leesburg stopped her vehicle along the northbound lanes of County Road 473 to help the badly-injured biker. An undetermined amount of time later, a 30-year-old woman driving a Buick Century collided with the damaged motorcycle that was laying in the road. This second crash propelled the unmanned motorcycle into the injured biker and the good samaritan.
Several Lake County emergency response teams and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol were sent to the scene of the multi-vehicle accident and quickly transported the seriously injured 51-year-old good samaritan to the Orlando Regional Medical Center. The 57-year-old motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries during the collision and passed away at the site of the crash.
The 59-year-old driver of the Toyota Tacoma and the 30-year-old driver of the Buick Century were unharmed during the incident.
This case is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
