Kids Injured in Orlando Car Accidents are on the Rise
A local Orlando Hospital has recently seen an alarming uptick in the number of children suffering injuries after auto accidents.
Pediatric trauma director Dr. Donald Plumley from Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children stated: “It’s just, it’s easy. You’re talking on the phone. You’ve got groceries. It’s raining. You put the kid in the car seat, and you forget to buckle it. It’s just one of those things you’ve got to stop and think for a minute.”
Over the past six years, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children has treated 680 pediatric trauma cases which include children of all ages. These injuries are a direct result of children not being buckled up, or being improperly restrained at the time of the car accident.
Shelley Jennings, a clinical nurse at the nearby Winnie Palmer Hospital Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, assists new parents leaving the hospital with their car seats. “They might not realize that when facing the rear, it needs to be the height of the harness, and needs to be at, or below.” She ensures that it is properly installed in the vehicle, and that their newborn is snugly restrained. “To me, your kids are your most precious commodity, “she said.
