Haines City Woman Killed in Four-Car Accident On I-4

On the evening of Wednesday, February 17th, 2016, a young woman was killed in an accident on Interstate 4 West involving four vehicles. The accident, which occurred on the portion of I-4 that runs through Osceola County, occurred around 5 p.m.

The victim was 21-year-old Maxine Bartkovich of Haines City. Bartkovich was driving her 2014 Toyota Corolla in the left lane near Exit 62 to World Drive when she was struck from behind by a Ford pickup truck. Bartkovich’s Corolla was then pushed into the rear end of another pickup truck, causing the second truck to strike the vehicle in front of it for a total of four vehicles.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck that struck Bartkovich’s Corolla was 44-year-old David Gillet of Tampa, whose state at the time of the accident was not disclosed. Both he and Bartkovich were transported by emergency medical professionals to Florida Hospital Celebration Health for their injuries, while the drivers of the other two vehicles involved suffered only vehicular damage. Gillett’s injuries were reportedly minor, but the 21-year-old’s injuries were not. She was later transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she would eventually pass away.

According to Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol, further investigation will be needed before police can consider bringing any charges against Gillette. So far, no details have been released as to the cause of the accident, or as to the 44-year-old’s current state of health.
