Drunk Driving Accident Leads to DUI Manslaughter Charges for Driver

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 27, 2013

Florida Highway Patrol officials recently filed DUI manslaughter charges against a Leesburg man in connection with a drunk driving accident that claimed the life of his passenger. Troopers say that the accident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on County Road 452 near Lake Yale Baptist Assembly Road near Umatilla in Lake County when the driver lost control of his 1996 Ford SUV, drove onto the shoulder, overcorrected and rolled several times. His passenger, a 31-year-old Lady Lake man, was ejected from the SUV during the accident and was rolled over by the vehicle when he landed. The driver was booked into the Lake County Jail and released on $50,500 bail.

The loss of a loved one is a traumatic time for any family, but their suffering is much worse when they learn that a fatal accident occurred due to someone’s negligence. In this case, the driver of the SUV was certainly negligent when he got behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, endangering himself, his passenger and anyone sharing the road with him.

Although no amount of compensation can replace the life of a loved one, damages awarded in a wrongful death suit or a negotiated settlement can provide much-needed help for family members. Damages can help pay for medical and funeral expenses, reduce financial hardship by replacing income that the victim would have provided, pay for counseling and help victims in many other ways while they deal with their loss.
