De Leon Teenager Dies After Being Ejected from Car in Crash
Members of the Florida Highway Patrol are among those investigating a fatal auto accident that took place within Volusia County on the night of Saturday, December 14th. It appears as though the incident, which took place very early in the morning, around 3:30, only involved a single car, and that there was only a single individual within this car. This person, a 17-year-old from De Leon Springs, was either not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash or something happened to cause the belt to become unbuckled during the impact.
At the above-mentioned time, the 17-year-old was driving their Chevy pickup truck down the southern lanes of Grand Avenue when they approached the intersection of this road and Banana Street. It is not clear exactly what happened next, and the investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol will likely be focusing on this aspect as the family of the 17-year-old continues to seek answers in relation to this incident. The outward evidence suggests that something took place to cause the teenager to lose control of the vehicle.
Before the diver was able to settle the car down, the Chevy left the roadway and entered the grass median separating the northern and southern lanes of Grand Avenue. At this time, the truck overturned. It was while the truck was rolling that it came into contact with a palm tree standing close to the roadway. It is not known if the driver was thrown from the car after the impact with the tree or if they were ejected while the car was rolling along the median.
The report did not mention who called 9-1-1 to report the crash. It is also possible that a trooper came upon the accident shortly after it took place. What we do know is that paramedics and EMTs were rushing to the scene shortly after the crash. When they arrived, the driver was still alive, and paramedics carefully loaded him into an ambulance and rushed him to Advent Health located in DeLand. It was sometime after the young person arrived at the emergency medical center that they were declared dead.
