Ambulance Passenger Dies After T-Bone Crash in Pasco County
An auto accident involving a passenger vehicle and a Pasco County ambulance early Wednesday morning on Morris Bridge Road claimed the life of a 78-year-old woman, according to preliminary reports from local authorities.
It was close to 7:30 a.m. on August 9, 2023, when troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the intersection of Morris Bridge Road and State Road 54 regarding a two-vehicle collision. Details surrounding the accident indicate that an in-service Pasco County ambulance was transporting a 78-year-old woman in the southbound direction of Morris Bridge Road when a 39-year-old Wesley Chapel man driving a Toyota Corolla approached from the eastern direction of State Road 54.
Pasco County officials stated that although the driver of the Toyota had a green light controlling his flow of traffic through the intersection, he did not yield to the illuminated emergency vehicle and slammed into the side of the ambulance.
Additional Pasco County rescue services were sent to the scene of the crash, as well as investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol. At the time of the collision, there were four EMTs aboard the ambulance with their 78-year-old patient. These individuals were unharmed during the accident and the elderly passenger was transferred to another emergency vehicle and taken to the nearest hospital. She sadly passed away a short time later. It is unclear if she succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision or if her death was related to why she was riding in the ambulance in the first place.
The 39-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla suffered minor injuries but refused treatment. He remained at the scene after the collision occurred.
This case is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. No official charges have been filed at this time.
