2-Year-Old Killed in Leesburg Car Accident
Shortly before noon on Tuesday, a accident occurred directly before the Gator Harley-Davidson dealership on U.S. Highway 441 and Fern Drive in Leesburg that left several individuals injured and one 2-year-old boy dead. The Leesburg Police Department has released information regard the accident between a Ford Explorer and a Ford Taurus, although there are certain details that have yet to be released or are still unknown.
According to the statement, the Explorer was headed northbound on U.S. Highway 441 when it collided with the Taurus. What exactly caused the Taurus and the Explorer to collide is as of yet uncertain, but there is a suggestion that the Taurus moved off of Fern Drive and into the traffic along 441, impacting the Explorer and causing the driver of the Explorer to cross over the elevated median at the center of the strip and overturn once, perhaps several times, before ultimately coming to a stop lying on its roof.
Eight people are reported as being inside the Ford Explorer during the time of the accident. One of them, a two-year-old boy, was thrown from the SUV during the rollover. When the emergency response teams arrived, they pronounced the boy dead at the scene. Three of the other individuals from the Explorer also sustained serious injuries during the accident and were airlifted from the scene to hospitals and trauma centers. The remaining passengers as well as the driver of the Taurus were also taken to hospitals in the area. The conditions of all those involved is as of yet unknown, although the Leesburg Police Department will continue to release information as it becomes available. The names of the victims will likely be released as soon as the next-of-kin notices have been issued.
The accident, which happened shortly after 10:30 in the morning, resulted in the highway to be backed up for several hours in both directions while the response crews worked to clear the highway of debris and gather as much information as possible regarding the circumstances that led to such a tragic and deadly incident.
