Orlando Woman Killed During Chain-Reaction Collision on Interstate 95

A six-vehicle pileup on Interstate 95 in Volusia County last Friday evening claimed the life of one person and injured four others, according to investigative officials with the Florida Highway Patrol.

Preliminary auto accident details from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol state that it was approximately 10:10 p.m. on April 21, 2023, when a 28-year-old man and his 25-year-old female passenger, both from Orlando, were traveling in the southbound direction of I-95 near State Road 40 in a 2019 Hyundai Elantra. For reasons that are currently unknown, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra veered into the adjacent lane and crashed into a Hyundai Tucson that was driving in the same direction.

The impact from the first crash propelled the Hyundai Elantra into the direct path of an oncoming Toyota Corolla and the two vehicles were involved in a T-bone collision. The momentum from this second accident caused the Toyota Corolla to spin out of control along the southbound lanes of the interstate where it slammed into a safety guardrail, rear-ended a Volvo XC-90 SUV, then finally came to a complete stop in front of an approaching semi-truck.

The driver of the big rig was unable to avoid the Toyota Corolla and the semi crashed into the right side of the Corolla, which pushed both vehicles onto the paved median. Finally, another driver behind the wheel of a Toyota Rav4 attempted to avoid the chain-reaction accident but was instead involved in the entanglement when the Toyota Corolla crashed into the passenger’s side of their vehicle after its collision with the semi-truck.

Authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol and several Volusia County EMTs were dispatched to the scene of the six-vehicle collision. Emergency personnel transported the 28-year-old driver of the Elantra to Halifax Medical Center in serious condition. His 25-year-old passenger sustained severe injuries during the incident and did not survive.

The 20-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla, a woman from Jacksonville, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. A 21-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman from Jacksonville, the driver and passenger from the Hyundai Tucson, respectively, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The remaining individuals from the semi-truck, Toyota Rav4, and the Volvo XC-90 were unharmed during the fatal collision.

This deadly auto accident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
