Orange County Deputy Injured in Three-Car Accident

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on August 14, 2017

On the evening of August 13, 2017, at approximately 8 p.m. in South Orlando, an Orange County sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured after she involved in a three-car accident near the intersection of Americana Boulevard and John Young Parkway.

According to reports, Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Bertha Osorio, 23, was travelling northbound on John Young Parkway en route to an incident in which she was dispatched, when she suddenly lost control of her police cruiser. The vehicle crossed through the grassy median at the Americana Blvd. intersection and into southbound traffic, first striking a Kia that was driving south in the center lane. A Nissan that was travelling in the same direction was unable to stop before impact, and it crashed into the passenger side of the patrol car, causing a three-car pileup.

The northbound and southbound lanes of John Young Parkway were closed down as fire and rescue teams arrived on the scene to find Deputy Osorio trapped in her vehicle and suffering from serious injuries. Firefighters had to cut the roof off of her police car in order to extract her. Once freed, she was then transported by ambulance to Orlando Regional Medical Center for immediate treatment. Both drivers of the other two vehicles involved in this accident sustained minor injuries. It is unclear at this time as to what caused Osorio to lose control of her car in the first place. Florida State Troopers have stated that this crash is currently under investigation.

This specific accident may seem unusual and unlikely due to the involvement of a sheriff’s deputy, however, auto accidents that involve law enforcement vehicles are far more common than you may think, unfortunately. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida ranks 6th in the nation for the number of law enforcement officer fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents.
