Sarasota County Man Charged with DUI in Fatal SUV Accident
After nearly six months of extensive investigative efforts, authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol have arrested a 25-year-old man for his alleged connection to a fatal DUI crash that killed three people last September in Englewood.
According to Florida Highway Patrol records from the initial auto accident, it was close to 6:30 p.m. on September 12, 2022, when 25-year-old Cash Kaufmann was driving a 2018 Hyundai SUV in the southbound direction of State Road 776, locally known as Indiana Avenue. Reports indicate that the Hyundai SUV entered the intersection of Artists Avenue and Indiana Avenue at a high rate of speed and crashed into the side of another SUV that was driving through the intersection on Artists Avenue.
The impact from the accident caused the second SUV to rollover onto the passenger’s side of the vehicle before coming to a complete stop along State Road 776.
Englewood emergency response teams and troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were immediately dispatched to the SUV crash site and upon their arrival, they sadly discovered that the 73-year-old driver of the second SUV and her 68-year-old passenger had sustained severe life-threatening injuries during the collision. They were both declared dead at the scene. Another 68-year-old passenger from this SUV was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries, but she passed away four days later.
The driver of the first sport utility vehicle, 25-year-old Cash Kaufmann, also sustained serious injuries during the collision, although his condition and road to recovery after the accident are unclear. He was taken into custody earlier this week, booked into the Sarasota County Jail, and faces charges of vehicular homicide, DUI property damage, and three counts of DUI manslaughter.
Field sobriety and blood tests for Kaufmann at the time of the crash revealed a BAC level of .096, in addition to positive markers for THC.
