Pedestrian Laying in Melbourne Roadway Killed by Car

By Orlando Personal Injury Attorney on December 2, 2020

Members of the Melbourne Police Department are working to develop a timeline for an event that took place along Highway A1A within the city on Thanksgiving and resulted in the death of a single individual. At the time of this writing, we know there is still a lot of detail to be parsed out as the investigation progresses, but we do have several statements and tweets issued by the Melbourne Police Department that can aid us in uncovering just what took place.

It was very early in the morning, around 3:00 a.m., when a 35-year-old individual was driving a vehicle down Highway A1A. We know from the reports that details gathered from this individual at the scene lead the authorities who conducted the initial investigation to determine that the 35-year-old was under the influence of neither drugs nor alcohol.

At the same time as this person was driving their car, a 52-year-individual, temporarily without a home, was walking close to the roadway. A part of the current investigation lies in determining whether or not there were any witnesses to inform the authorities as to when the 52-year-old left the sidewalk. This person was perhaps intending to cross the road at the time, but they only made it a part of the way before they laid down in the roadway. The reports indicated that the man unfortunately performed this action while still in the middle of the travel lanes, meaning that they were now lying in the dark, on a dark road, directly in the path of oncoming vehicles.

The first vehicle to come along was that being driven by the 35-year-old person.

By the time the driver became aware that there was a person lying in the road, it was too late. The pedestrian was unable to escape from the car as it hurtled towards him, and the following moments saw the car striking the pedestrian with a considerable amount of force. As a result, the pedestrian sustained severe injuries. Paramedics and EMTs rushed to the area to try and treat the man, but by the time they arrived there was nothing they could do. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver did not sustain any injuries.
