Kissimmee Motorcyclist Killed During Hit-and-Run on State Road 44
Instead of celebrating the new year with family and friends, the relatives of a 51-year-old motorcyclist are now planning a funeral for their loved one after he was killed during a hit-and-run collision last Friday night in Sumter County.
According to initial auto accident reports from responding troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 7:25 p.m. on December 30, 2022, when 59-year-old Leesburg resident Lloyd Douglas Walters was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the westbound direction of State Road 44 close to near Lake Okahumpka Park. As he approached the highway’s intersection County Road 171, Walters positioned his vehicle within the left turn lane.
For reasons that are currently unknown, Lloyd Douglas Walters decided against making the left turn onto C.R. 171 and instead pulled his Jeep back into the oncoming traffic of westbound State Road 44. This dangerous maneuver placed the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the direct path of a 51-year-old motorcyclist from Kissimmee. The two vehicles collided and the driver of the motorcycle was ejected from his bike and thrown onto the roadway.
Almost immediately after the collision occurred, Lloyd Douglas Walters fled the scene of the accident in his Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Several Sumter County emergency responders and officers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the crash site. They quickly transported the severely injured motorcyclist to the nearest hospital where he sadly passed away.
Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate Lloyd Douglas Walters a few miles down the road on State Road 44 near Morse Boulevard. He was arrested and taken to the Sumter County Detention Center where he faces multiple charges, including DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
