Daytona Beach Bicyclist Killed During Hit-and-Run Crash on U.S. 92
In an area that has recently been plagued with a rash of serious hit-and-run accidents, authorities in Daytona Beach were yet again dispatched to an area along International Speedway Boulevard to investigate another such incident that claimed the life of a local bicyclist last Sunday evening.
Preliminary accident reports from responding troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that it was shortly after 8:30 p.m. on September 11, 2022, when a 56-year-old man from Daytona Beach was riding his bicycle in the westbound direction along the shoulder of U.S. Highway 92, known locally as International Speedway Boulevard. It is unclear if the bicyclist was wearing reflective clothing or lighting as they rode down the highway, but as they approached the vicinity of 4th Street, an unknown driver veered off of the roadway and crashed into the 56-year-old man and his bicycle. The driver of the vehicle fled the area after the collision occurred.
Several Daytona Beach emergency response teams and members of the Florida Highway Patrol were sent to the scene of the hit-and-run crash and although they arrived within a matter of minutes, the 56-year-old bicyclist had already died due to the severe injuries he sustained during the collision.
Investigators and accident reconstruction experts were able to recover a piece of the hit-and-run suspect’s vehicle that had broken off during the deadly collision. Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol believe they are searching for a dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee with front-end damage to the passenger’s side of the sport utility vehicle.
