Tampa Tractor-Trailer Crash Claims the Life of One Individual on Veterans Expressway
According to preliminary incident reports from the responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol, an individual suffered fatal injuries Friday afternoon after their pickup truck was involved in a deadly collision with a tractor-trailer along Veterans Expressway close to Hillsborough Avenue near Tampa.
It was approximately 1:20 p.m. on September 17, 2021, when authorities with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as well as troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were called to the scene of a fiery auto accident involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer on the northbound lanes of Veterans Expressway in Hillsborough County. Officials state that the yet-to-be-named driver of a pickup truck was traveling in the outside lanes of State Road 589 when something caused them to lose control of their vehicle and crash into a concrete barrier on the highway. The force of impact from this first collision bounced the pickup truck back into oncoming traffic and into the right axles of a tractor-trailer, which jackknifed as a result. Both vehicles then proceeded to slam into another concrete barrier and erupted into flames before finally coming to a complete stop.
Local Hillsborough County emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the severe trucking accident and when they arrived at the crash site, they quickly recognized that the driver of the pickup truck had been unable to survive the severity of their injuries sustained in the collision and had already passed away. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.
Although it is unclear at this time if anyone will face legal ramifications, accident reconstructionists and cleanup crews worked for multiple hours to piece together the timeline and chain of events leading up to the deadly collision. The highway was reopened to the public around 6:30 p.m.
