Multi-Vehicle Semi Crash on I-75 Leaves Several Injured
On the evening of Wednesday, November 18th, 2015, a severe crash on I-75 involving multiple passenger vehicles and three semi-trucks led to at least one fatality. The accident, which happened around 5:30 pm that evening, occurred near the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. Later, it was determined that three individuals were critically injured in the crash, three more suffered mild injuries, and one, the driver of a Wiley Sanders semi-truck, was killed.
According to authorities with the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash led to significant backups in traffic in both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-75. After emergency response vehicles were able to address the scene and disperse, the blockage eventually cleared up and traffic resumed as normal. Alachua County Fire Rescue professionals told reporters at the time of the accident that the primary concern of authorities was to contain a significant diesel leak that occurred in one of the vehicles during the crash.
Since the incident occurred, Florida State Troopers have been investigating to determine exactly what happened, and who – if anyone – was at fault. Wiley Sanders, the Alabama-based company whose truck driver was killed in the incident, says that it has always maintained a satisfactory safety record. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Wiley Sanders trucks generally carry cargo consisting of general freight, coal/coke, chemicals, dry bulk commodities, beverages and/or paper products. Information was not released regarding the contents of the truck at the time of the crash. Luckily, the contents of the truck did not end up worsening the situation.
