Lake County Woman Killed in Collision with Semi-Truck on State Road 50
Preliminary accident reports from the Florida Highway Patrol operating within Lake County indicate that a woman was killed Friday morning near State Road 50 after her vehicle was involved in a fatal collision with a semi-truck carrying a load of concrete.
It was approximately 6:45 a.m. on August 21st, 2020, just as the local commuter traffic was starting for the day, when Lake County authorities first started to receive incoming information regarding an accident involving a semi-truck and a sedan-type car at the intersection of State Road 50 and Douglas Road. Emergency responders and police departments from throughout the county started to converge on the crash site, as well as members of the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to Lt. Kim Montes, a long-serving, highly-decorated trooper with the FHP, a 43-year-old woman from Mascotte was driving her sedan along Douglas Road when she approached a stop sign at the intersecting State Road 50. It was at this point that officials believe the woman attempted to make a left turn onto S.R. 50, but in doing so, she drove her vehicle directly into the path of an oncoming semi-truck. The driver of the big rig, which was transporting concrete at the time of the collision, was unable to stop his 18-wheeler before it crashed into the driver’s side of the sedan, instantly killing the Mascotte resident. The 45-year-old truck driver from Mount Dora suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident, and was quickly transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital where he remains in serious condition.
This fatal auto accident is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. It has yet to be determined if alcohol or drugs played a factor.
