Lake County Truck Accident Claims Life of Haines City Man
A truck accident has resulted in the death of a man driving a van who was hit by a semi-truck driving on State Road 33. Florida Highway Patrol officers investigated the fatal Florida truck accident that occurred on S.R. 33 near the intersection with Pine Island Road. The Orlando Sentinel claims that the tractor-trailer was driven by a 38-year-old Texas man who was southbound on S.R. 33 when he realized that he was heading in the wrong direction.
According to accident investigators, the truck driver attempted to back into a private drive along the east shoulder of S.R. 33 to get turned around and had backed his trailer across the highway’s northbound lane. The man killed in the Florida truck accident was a 56-year-old Haines City man driving a Chevrolet van that was northbound on S.R. 33 and impacted the left side of the semi’s trailer. Police say he tried to stop before hitting the trailer, but was unable to avoid hitting the trailer.
The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and of the seven passengers he had in the van, six of them suffered injuries described as critical or serious. The accident occurred just before 4 a.m.
Even though the collision involved the semi’s trailer, collisions between large trucks weighing up to 80,000 pounds and smaller passenger vehicles usually result in tragedies. Smaller vehicles simply aren’t designed and engineered to withstand the impact of a much larger truck. If the truck accident victims aren’t killed in the collision, they often suffer severe injuries such as:
- Crushed limbs
- Ruptured internal organs
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Back injuries
- Paralysis
- Broken bones
- Lacerations
- Compound fractures
- And a wide range of other injuries
