Toyota Expands Recall to China and Europe
Toyota Motor Corporation, already contending with the biggest recall in the company’s history due to accelerators which may become stuck and cause the vehicle to accelerate out of control, has expanded their recall to include Toyotas sold in China and Europe as well. The world’s largest automaker, which had a sterling reputation for dependability, safety, and quality, is dealing with a recall that affects 6 million vehicles in the U.S. alone. It is not yet known how many Toyota models in Europe and China will be affected but the recall is expected to cost the company billions to fix the accelerator problems and reimburse dealers for the work.
Initially, Toyota thought that floor mats were the cause of accelerators on certain models becoming stuck. They advised owners to remove their floor mats to prevent them from bunching up behind the accelerator, causing it to become stuck. But after more research, they found that the gas pedal mechanism was causing the accelerators to stick and become unresponsive and issued a recall in the U.S. for the following models:
• 2009-2010 RAV4 models
• 2005-2010 Avalon models
• 2009-2010 Corolla models
• 2009-2010 Matrix models
• 2010 Highlander models
• 2007-2010 Tundra models
• 2008-2010 Sequoia models
• Some 2007-2010 Camry models
After Toyota discovered the source of the problems recently, they expanded the recall to China and European countries as well. The company has announced that at least 75,000 RAV4 models sold in China are part of the recall but analysts think that the recall will eventually affect at least 2 million Toyotas in addition to the 6 million models in the U.S. Eight million models are equal to the number of new Toyotas the company sold in 2009.
