Satellite Beach House Fire Displaces Couple
Very early in the morning on the first day of March, a couple living in the Brevard County city of Satellite Beach were just preparing to climb into bed when the smoke alarm in their house began to go off. A spokesperson for the Satellite Beach Fire Department, Deputy Fire Chief Dave Abernathy, told reporters that after the two people heard the alarm, the smoke and flames immediately began to surround them. Grabbing what they could, the couple rushed out of the home and stood outside as the fire engines screamed into the area.
Firefighters began to battle the quickly spreading blaze as it ate through parts of the home’s rear and edged towards the front of the house. They teams efforts were ultimately successful and the entire home was not destroyed as a result of the fire, however it is believed that the house sustained critical damage from the flames.
As of this writing, it is believed that the fire began somewhere near the rear of the house, likely on the home’s patio. There has not yet been a statement regarding the suspected reasons behind the fire, whether or not the authorities suspect arson or if it was just an accident caused by some as-of-yet undetermined circumstance.
The home itself had previously suffered damaged during the particularly devastating hurricane season from the past year, and one of the home’s owners told reporters that they were about to begin repairs on the roof. The sudden fire will likely place a temporary hold on any efforts to improve or repair damage to the home that was not caused by the blaze.
Due in part to the fast response of the Satellite Beach Fire Department, no one was injured in the fire and the flames were able to be suppressed before they spread or completely consumed the home; however, two out of the couple’s three cats are still missing, although the report did not state if they were believed to have been in the home at the time of the fire or if it is possible that they escaped and are in hiding.
