One Man Killed, another Critically Injured in Winter Park Electrical Accident

A recent electrical accident in Winter Park has left one man dead and another hospitalized in critical condition after they were electrocuted in a tree-trimming accident. Seminole County Fire personnel responded to a call around 10 a.m. one recent morning on Alexa Court near State Road 436. Accident investigators report that the two victims were employees of H & L Landscaping and were trimming trees at a private residence when they came in contact with a power line. One worker was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center after falling to the ground from an undisclosed height.

Osceola County Officials Announce Plan to Install Red-Light Cameras

Osceola County commissioners recently announced that they plan to install red-light cameras at ten intersections in unincorporated locations of the county. Since Florida lawmakers passed legislation allowing their installation in 2010, red-light cameras have been installed in many locations throughout our state. The devices have already been installed in several locations in Orange County, including the cities of Orlando, Apopka, Edgewood, Groveland, Maitland and Winter Park.

Over 600 Passengers Fall Ill to Norovirus on Royal Caribbean Cruise

This week a Royal Caribbean cruise ship was forced to turn around and return to port early after over 600 passengers on board became sick with what is likely a norovirus outbreak. The ship, which was on its way to the US Virgin Islands, had 3,050 passengers and 1,165 crew members on board.

Orlando Kids receive 94 Bicycles in Annual Bike Giveaway

Ninety-four Orange County children recently received bicycles at the 12th annual Wheels 4 Kids event. The yearly event began in 2002 and was founded by City of Orlando District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan to give kids who live in the Reeves Terrace neighborhood an alternative mode of transportation to school after bus service to the neighborhood was suspended. Santa Claus joined Ms. Sheehan in giving out bikes this year, thanks to donations from many partners in the community and Walmart, who supplied the bikes to organizers at a discount. Olde Town Brokers donated locks and bike cables to the lucky recipients to protect their wheels.

Police Find Drugs in SUV that Crashed into Oviedo Fire Station

Oviedo police are looking for the driver and one occupant of a rented SUV that recently crashed into a fire station in the city. Investigating officers report that the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the fire station located on Central Avenue. They say that officers found small amounts of crack cocaine and prescription medication in the rented BMW SUV after the driver and occupant fled from the scene. No Oviedo firefighters were injured in the crash but blood samples collected from the deployed airbags in the SUV suggest that both occupants of the car were injured in the crash.

Truck Crashes into and Severely Damages Orange County Home, Injuring Teen Occupants

Florida Highway Patrol troopers that a pickup truck driven by a 16-year-old with no driver’s license lost control recently and crashed into an Orange County home. Troopers say that the crash seriously injured four teens who were riding in the truck but no one on the home was injured. Footage from a neighbor’s surveillance camera showed the moments before the Ford Ranger slammed into the home with enough force to push the home off its foundation.

UCF Students and Local Bar Owners Say New Parking Policy will Encourage Drunk Driving

University of Central Florida students and local bar owners say that a new university parking policy will encourage drunk driving in our area. The school recently issued a warning that all vehicles parked overnight at an off-campus plaza will be towed and impounded and owners will have to pay a $125 fine to get their vehicle back. The plaza is a very popular place to park for UCF students frequenting nearby bars. Students claim that the new policy encourages them to get into their cars after a night of drinking and drive down to Alafaya Trail, one of the most notorious roadways for drunk driving in Orange County.

$2.5 Billion Johnson & Johnson DePuy Hip Implant Settlement

In what may be a landmark settlement, Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay up to $2.5 billion in damages in order to resolve over 8,000 lawsuits filed over its recalled DePuy hip implant devices. This would make it the largest medical device settlement in history. In 2010, the company recalled over 93,000 hip replacement devices when it was determined that they were defective.

Kissimmee Officials Announce new Bridge to reduce Pedestrian Accidents

Kissimmee officials recently announced that they are going to build a new pedestrian bridge over a particularly busy road in order to make it safer for people who use a nearby bike trail. The bridge will be built at John Young Parkway near Columbia Avenue at the end of the bike trail, where it meets a very busy six-lane highway. The projected cost of the bridge is $8 million, but city officials say that this is a small price to pay to protect lives. Around 40,000 cars travel on this section of John Young Parkway every day. Since one side of the trail ends at this busy road, pedestrians and bicyclists often risk crossing the six lanes of traffic to get to the other side.
