One Man Killed, another Critically Injured in Winter Park Electrical Accident
A recent electrical accident in Winter Park has left one man dead and another hospitalized in critical condition after they were electrocuted in a tree-trimming accident. Seminole County Fire personnel responded to a call around 10 a.m. one recent morning on Alexa Court near State Road 436. Accident investigators report that the two victims were employees of H & L Landscaping and were trimming trees at a private residence when they came in contact with a power line. One worker was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center after falling to the ground from an undisclosed height.
Little is known about the extent of the injured worker’s injuries. However, victims of electrical accident where the person, a ladder, a cherry-picker or another piece of equipment comes into contact with power lines, usually result in serious and catastrophic injuries, such as:
- Severe, often disfiguring and debilitating burns
- Burns and temporary or permanent impaired function in internal organs
- Nerve and brain injuries
- Cardiac arrest, sometimes resulting in permanent arrhythmia
- Permanent muscle injuries
- Blunt trauma from falls, a common result of being electrocuted
- Many other devastating injuries that impair the victim’s mobility and quality of life
At this point, we do not know whether or not the electrical accident was caused by negligence or whether it was a very unfortunate series of events. We do know that one worker’s family is grieving for the loss of a loved one and the survivor’s family faces many months and perhaps years of personal, financial and emotional hardship as a result of this accident. If the workers’ employer was negligent in providing proper training, safety equipment and other preventative measures, they could be liable for damages, including funeral expenses, medical bills, loss of function, compensation for pain and suffering and other damages.
