Deltona Biker Dies After a Head-on Collision with a Pickup Truck in Volusia County
Local homicide investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office are currently working diligently to determine the exact cause of a pickup truck vs. motorcycle accident that claimed the life of a 73-year-old biker Saturday evening while he was driving along Deltona Boulevard.
According to a statement given to the press from Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Laura Williams, it was shortly before 8:30 p.m. on October 9, 2021, when 73-year-old Deltona resident John Candeto was driving his 2001 Harley-Davidson in the southbound direction of Deltona Boulevard, slowly approaching the street’s intersection with Gaynor Court. As he pulled up to the stoplight controlling the area’s flow of traffic, an unnamed man behind the wheel of a northbound 2013 Ford F-150 attempted to maneuver a left-hand turn but instead drove directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. Unable to avoid a collision with the pickup, the biker crashed head-on into the side of the truck.
Within a matter of minutes, emergency response teams with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of the grisly accident and immediately decided that the 73-year-old Deltona man required further medical assistance. Once he was stabilized for transport, he was then taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for treatment of his critical injuries. Doctors and nurses fought feverishly to save the biker’s life, but his injuries proved to be far too severe to survive from, and he passed away shortly thereafter.
The unidentified driver of the Ford F-150 was uninjured during the collision and told police that he simply did not see the motorcyclist. He was not arrested at the time of the crash, however, the investigation into this fatal accident is still underway and charges could be brought forth depending on the outcome of the case.
