16-Year-Old Biker from Deltona Killed During T-Bone Collision in Volusia County
Preliminary collision reports from troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that a 16-year-old motorcyclist from Deltona suffered fatal injuries Monday morning after he was involved in an auto accident with another motorist close to an I-4 entrance ramp in Volusia County.
According to responding officers with the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 11:45 a.m. on August 30, 2021, when a 16-year-old teenager from Deltona was driving his motorcycle along the eastbound lanes of State Road 44. As the young motorcyclist neared one of the road’s many entrance ramps to Interstate 4, a 79-year-old man from New Smyrna Beach entered the same area in his sedan from the westbound direction of the street. It was as the New Smyrna Beach resident attempted to make a left-hand turn that his vehicle became positioned in such a way that put him into the oncoming path of the teen biker. Unable to avoid an accident with the sedan, the motorcyclist violently crashed into the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
Volusia County first responders and additional local law enforcement agencies arrived at the scene of the accident within minutes of being dispatched only to discover that the 16-year-old biker had already succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the deadly T-bone collision. The 79-year-old male driver of the other vehicle was unharmed.
Witnesses to the accident said that the biker had been traveling at a high rate of speed before the accident, however, detectives have yet to corroborate or confirm this statement with any physical evidence. The young motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal crash. An investigation into this case is currently being conducted by the Florida Highway Patrol and further details will be provided when/if they are necessary.
