Two Workers Injured in Construction Accident at Power Plant
Two workers injured recently at a construction accident at the Florida Power & Light plant in Indiantown are being treated at local hospitals with undisclosed injuries. Martin County Sheriff’s Office deputies said that the workers, a 32-year-old Zephyrhills man and a 52-year-old Sarasota man, were working on a large steel frame when it collapsed. One of the workers was reportedly working on the ground behind the frame while the other was on a ladder on the front of the structure when it collapsed.
One of the workers was transported by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for treatment and the other was airlifted to LRMC due to the severity of his injuries.
Florida Power & Light spokesman Bud Fraga issued a statement about the construction accident. He said, "At FPL, the safety of our employees and contractors is always a priority. For privacy reasons we cannot discuss the severity or condition of those injured, but our thoughts and prayers are with them, their families and friends. An exhaustive investigation is being performed to understand what went wrong and to prevent future injuries and accidents."
Construction workers know that they work in a dangerous profession. Despite significant gains in safety equipment and proper safety procedures over the last few decades, many workers are injured and killed in Florida construction accidents each year. Some accidents are caused by unavoidable and tragic series of events. Others, however, are caused by negligence, such as companies that cut corners on safety, companies that manufacture defective equipment and other types of negligence.
