Quick Response by HazMat Team Averts Disaster in Oakland Park
A gas leak in Oakland Park was quickly capped by a local HazMat team last Thursday afternoon, averting what may have been a tragic disaster. Authorities note that construction crews working in the area most likely ruptured the line, and that construction company notified authorities immediately of the suspected leak. Police crews worked to evacuate homes and small businesses in the area of the leak, which was near Northeast 15th Avenue and 42nd Street. No one was injured in the incident.
Thursday’s gas line rupture is not unique in that there have been several instances of line ruptures in Florida in the previous 12 months, most of which occur when construction crews are working beneath the level of the street. By law, construction companies must obtain information pertaining to the location of underground lines prior to digging on site. However, even if companies are careful not to dig in these areas, disturbing the ground nearby can often put pressure on these lines, causing a gas line leak.
Natural gas in pure form is an odorless, tasteless vapor that is not detectable by human smell. As a safety precaution, an odor is added to the gas so that in case of a leak, it can be detected rather quickly and in smaller quantities. This gives the public more time to react in if a leak is present. If the leak goes unchecked, fumes will concentrate, and can be ignited spontaneously with even a small spark. Explosions and large fires may result from ignition of concentrated natural gas.
Because the potential for destruction is so great, often the outcome of a natural gas accident may include serious injuries or loss of life to its victims. Construction companies must take great care when planning projects to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to protect both their workers and the general public from natural gas accidents. Failure to do so can have catastrophic results.
